Here was a game that made changes for the better rather than building something terrible from the ground up. Pokémon Crystal Clear changed all of that for me.

As far as I was concerned, rom hacks were a waste of time. I’d see playthroughs on YouTube where games would have appalling looking fake Pokémon, the storylines would be ridiculous and badly paced, and they’d all be so poorly made. Crystal Clear removes the story of Crystal and opens the world up, allowing players to choose from a wide array of starter Pokémon, begin their journey in either Kanto or Johto, challenge gyms in any order they choose, and provides access to all 251 Pokémon.įor a long time I really hated the idea of Pokémon rom hacks. Pokémon Crystal Clear is a rom hack of Pokémon Crystal (2000) by develop Shockslayer. So, does Crystal Clear live up to all its hype?

When I stumbled across a video playthrough of the rom hack Pokémon Crystal Clear, a game that was heralded for removing so many of the restrictions that had bugged me for so long, I went out of my way to play it.

However, despite my affection for the series I have found myself growing impatient with their rigid linear storytelling and restrictions. I’m such a fan that I’ve bought game consoles solely for the sake of playing the newest Pokémon game. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve replayed through those games.
